Blackjack is veruit het populairste kaartspel in de moderne casino's van Europa en Noord-Amerika. Net zoals vele andere bekende spellen, is zijn oorsprong niet duidelijk gedocumenteerd. Deze naam is afgeleid van een speciale regel die bepaalde wat de ideale hand was in Vingt-et-Un: een speler met in zijn hand als eerste twee kaarten een Schoppen Aas (i.e. een 'Black Spade') en een Schoppen Boer (i.e. een 'Jack of Spades'), kreeg extra uitbetaald. De neiging van engelse gokkers om rijmpjes te vormen (denk aan "chuck-a-luck", "acey-duecy"), resulteerde in de naam Black Jack.
